Confronting the overdose death epidemic

Communities are learning that there is a path out of addiction and risk, to a life that is positive and safe. It is time to mark the trail, align our efforts, and start doing what works.

In 2012, three Northern Kentucky counties with 9 percent of the state’s population had 15 percent of the state’s overdose deaths. But in 2020, despite fentanyl and COVID, the region was no longer suffering a disproportionate share of the state’s overdose deaths. SHARP Stop Heroin and Rescue People explains what happened, and what needs to happen next.

Get the Book
The first coherent and systematic approach to reducing drug overdose deaths and overcoming addiction in America. When communities support the milestones of personal recovery, they save lives.
SHARP shows how communities can make progress against the overdose epidemic, even as black market drugs are becoming more toxic. The book is based on nine years of research in Northern Kentucky, a region plagued by criminal drug traffickers who have flooded communities with fentanyl, methamphetamine, and other powerful substances.
The data shows that the SHARP approach works. SHARP’s plain-language approach stabilizes people quickly and supports them on their path towards recovery. It stops criminal behavior and helps people move forward in their lives with the support of family, friends, and neighbors.
